Lessons on Life and Leadership at the DEC

The Detroit Economic Club(DEC) was host to four fortunate Odette School of Business students, Dean Gilliam, Giuseppe Corio, and grad students, Zissan Ahmed and Blerina Hoxha this past Wednesday.

Joining them was Gary Kelly, the CEO, leader and a true pioneer of South West Airlines. The event was held at the beautiful Masonic Temple, a landmark in Detroit known for being the largest of its kind. The students were inspired by Kelly’s humble nature and wealth of teamwork experience. Gary Kelly credits much of the success at South West to the hard work and collaborative nature built by his team.

The young leaders were taught to invest in others and always put full effort into whatever initiative life might bring forward. By making the most of his opportunities, Gary Kelly was able to quickly grow with the company over his tenure. He did a phenomenal job of painting a clear picture of South West’s greatest accomplishments, including zero layoffs.

The students will take with them some phenomenal lessons on life and leadership. They would like to give a special thanks to Mr. Stephen Polk of Highgate LLC and The Odette School of Business for supporting this initiative.

The Detroit Economic Club’s Student Program offers the region’s high school, college and university students exciting opportunities to learn. Programs provide unparalleled experience for students to engage in thoughtful discussion with today’s local and national leaders and DEC members.
