What is the definition of debate:

  1. a formal discussion on a particular topic in a public meeting or legislative assembly, in which opposing arguments are put forward.
  2. argue about (a subject), especially in a formal manner.

Debate is also known as the activity that brings the art of reading, thinking and speaking together in one place.

The Odette School of Business was the hub of the Richard Peddie Invitational Debate Tournament this past week. Teams of two in both novice and varsity streams, totalling over 100 students from 11 high schools throughout the city and county participated.

Sarah Carriere, one of the organizers of the event and Captain of the Odette Debate team likes how this event is used as a recruiting tool for those students who are thinking of going into Business. “This competition allows for high school students to interact with various Odette students, faculty, and staff, as well as become familiar with the Odette School of Business. As they move from room to room for each round of debate, students, especially those in grade 12, get a sense of what life as a university student is like.”

“Debate creates leaders. Leading requires intelligence, vision, empathy, efficiency, and resolve. It is great to allow the students this opportunity to test and refine these skills while they are in high school,” stated Sophia Mannina, President of the Odette Debate team, and organizer of the Fall ’18 event.
