The Odette School of Business Toastmasters hosted the Area 43 International Speech and Evaluation contests. Odette Toastmasters members competed against two other local Toastmasters clubs. Their members secured three out of four spots to advance to the Division level. The contests were well-attended by members from across the Windsor-Detroit area.
The International Speech Contest required participants to deliver prepared speeches of 5 to 7 minutes. The speeches were judged based on their originality, message, and the impact of the delivery. Odette Toastmasters member Spencer Hughes took first place with his powerful speech “The Day I Was Wrong”. After having been announced as the winner, Spencer said “I never imagined myself winning a speech contest. I never had the confidence; but when you speak from the heart, people will listen. That is what gives me confidence”.

The Evaluation Contest required members to provide a 2-3 minute evaluation of a target speaker. Our target speaker was John Salalila from Windsor Toastmasters who was given excellent feedback on how his presentation could be improved. Providing high quality evaluations is a vital part of the Toastmasters program. Developing organized 2-3 minute evaluations allow members to improve their listening, critical thinking and communication skills while testing their ability to work under pressure. Odette Toastmasters members Anshika Jain and Kevin Kapustiak finished first and second respectively in the evaluation contest. A first-year student, Anshika mentioned that she “really enjoyed having the opportunity to compete against such incredible speakers” and “looks forward to representing Odette Toastmasters in the Division contest”.
